Through the dedicated efforts of DOH-Jefferson, community partners and engaged residents, Jefferson County continues to grow as a healthier place to live, work and thrive.
Improving access to healthy food
Jefferson County is a rural county and, as a result, residents have limited access to grocery stores, which also means they have limited access to nutritious food. DOH- Jefferson has worked to prioritize initiatives that increase access to healthy foods while empowering residents to make informed lifestyle choices.
DOH-Jefferson’s Community Health Liaison partnered with the Jefferson County Library to establish a seed library, encouraging residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Community members are invited to “check out” seeds and are provided education on gardening techniques and plant maintenance to support long-term success.

In collaboration with civic organizations and residents, a community citrus garden has also been cultivated, offering a sustainable source of fresh fruit.
To further support food accessibility, DOH-Jefferson partnered with Second Harvest to install a grocery locker on the health department campus. This resource provides convenient access to nutritious food for families in need.
Additionally, recognizing the importance of connecting residents to existing resources, DOH-Jefferson has compiled and distributed a comprehensive list of local food pantries throughout the county.

Promoting physical activity
DOH-Jefferson is also committed to creating opportunities for residents to stay active and improve their overall health.
Exercise equipment has been installed at Hall Park in Lamont, providing a free and accessible way for residents to engage in physical activity.
A pickleball court at the Jefferson County Recreation Park has been refurbished, encouraging recreation, social interaction and healthy movement.

DOH-Jefferson remains dedicated to building a healthier Jefferson County by expanding access to resources, fostering community partnerships, and promoting healthy lifestyles. Together, these efforts are making a lasting impact and helping residents lead healthier, more active lives.
