Former Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA) softball stand-out Ashlyn Rogers recently helped land the Santa Fe College Saints in the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) state tournament.
The Saints earned their way into the tournament after a two-game sweep of Daytona State College on Thursday, April 22. Both games were low-scoring games with the Saints winning the opening game of the double-header 1-0. Then, in the second game of the twin-bill, the score was knotted at two runs apiece in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when Rogers stepped up to the plate and belted a solo home run over the left-field wall on a 1-2 pitch. That homer, Rogers' ninth of the season, gave the Saints a 3-2 lead going into the seventh inning. The Saints managed to hold off the Falcons in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
“Madison Dixon and Ashlyn Rogers both worked through some struggles at the plate to get the big HR when we needed it,” said Santa Fe Head Coach Lindsay Fico. “I'm proud of how we competed and the fact that we never gave up. It was a great day to be a Saint!”
The Saints (28-14) will now face Pensacola State in the FCSAA State Tournament on Friday, May 7. The tournament continues through Monday, May 10, in Longwood, Fla.
