Four Jefferson Somerset Tigers took a big step toward their future on Friday, April 30, when they signed to play football at the next level. Brian Crumity, Lance Footman, Gekobe Smith and Liroy Travis have all signed to play football at Central International College (CIC), in Chester, Va.
Surrounded by family, friends, teammates and teachers, the four athletes participated in a signing ceremony held in the school media center.
Central International College is a religious-based college that offers not only religious studies, but a wide range of other academics classes as well. The football team plays in NCAA Division II.
Crumity plans to study physical therapy while at CIC. He played on the offensive line and at defensive tackle while with the Tigers. He anticipates playing the same position for the Cardinals. Through his junior year, Crumity had 40 total tackles, including two sacks. (Senior year stats were unavailable)
Footman says he plans to study clinical psychology in school. He looks to play either linebacker or defensive end at CIC. Through his junior year, Footman had amassed 167 total tackles, including six sacks, one interception and five caused fumbles.
Smith is undecided on a major in school. He was a standout linebacker for the Tigers and looks to continue playing that position once he gets to Virginia. (Smith's stats were unavailable.)
Travis hopes to obtain a degree in sports management while at CIC. At Jefferson Somerset, he was utilized as a receiver, although he says he can play several
positions and can be used as a utility player. Travis' stats were unavailable.
During the ceremony, Coach Ira Reynolds reminded the signees of the amount of community support that was evident from the crowd of people in the library. Coach Reynolds also encouraged the younger players that with hard work in the classroom, as well as on the field, they too, could have the same opportunities.
