For anyone wondering if the Fourth of July fireworks and celebration are going to take place this summer, given the uncertainty of the times, know that the event is not going to happen.
Ken Faircloth, commander of the American Legion Otto Walker Post 49, confirmed on Tuesday, May 26, that the fireworks and celebration have been called off for this July Fourth.
Although the group has not been able to meet since March because of the coronavirus outbreak, Faircloth said that in talking the situation over with the other officers during the last couple of weeks, a decision was reached to cancel the event.
“We decided not to do it,” Faircloth said. “It's just a terrible situation overall.”
Largely responsible for the cancellation, he said, was the coronavirus pandemic and the social distancing measures that are still in place. Other contributing factors, he said, had to do with donations being down and pyrotechnic wizard Wallace Bullock, who has long orchestrated the fireworks display, indicating that he would not be available this year.
“Hopefully, we'll do it again next year,” Faircloth said of the popular annual event. “We'll certainly do our best to get it back on.”
