I read in the April 26 edition of the paper how solid waste salaries are going up by $37,000 due to the state-mandated minimum wage increase. Since the introduction of the permit system about 4 years ago, solid waste department salaries as a budget item have gone up hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a percentage rate of increase, they have exceeded even what Washington DC is spending, and that's an accomplishment (sarcasm). This is due mainly to staffing remote sites, something we avoided doing for years, and also by the constitutional amendment for the magical $15/hour minimum wage.
