Rotary Youth Camp of North Florida (RYC) is accepting applications for its annual summer camp through May 15. The camp theme for 2022 is Knights of the Round Table!
RYC provides a week of free, overnight summer camp to individuals with disabilities. Each child has their own counselor for one-on-one attention, 24/7 during the week they attend. Nursing staff also are on duty 24/7.
July 3-8 will be for campers under 13.
July 10-15 is for campers aged 13 to 16.
July 17-22 is for campers aged 17 to 21.
July 24-28 is for campers over 21 who have Down's Syndrome.
Joyce Dove, executive director for RYC, says the camp is able to serve 40 campers per week. Staff are trained to meet the needs of children and young adults with challenges such as autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, mobility limitations and special diets.
The purpose of the camp is to raise campers' self-esteem, increase their social skills and provide opportunities for success in outdoor recreational activities. Camp activities include opportunities for swimming, arts & crafts, hikes, bonfires, dance and music.
Rotary Club of Monticello has been donating funds for the camp and also providing one of the meals each week. Members prepare the food, go out to the camp site and serve it to the campers.
“Our club has been a great supporter,” says James Muchovej, president of the Rotary Club of Monticello, who is looking forward to local members' involvement again this year.
Families interested in RYC can find an application and additional information at rycnf.org. The webiste also includes staff applications.
