One senior and and one graduate of last year's class at Jefferson Somerset recently signed on to play football with Florida Memorial University (FMU) on National Signing Day, Feb. 3.
Ja'Quan Coasey, the senior at Jefferson Somerset, and De'Trevian Nealy, the graduate, both played football at Jefferson Somerset and were both recognized for their talent and offered to sign with FMU.
Ja'Quan Coasey is 17, and is the son of James Coasey and Gemma Alexander. When he played football with Jefferson Somerset, his positions were receiver and safety. Coasey says he's been playing football his whole life, though he stopped for a while, playing for the basketball team at Jefferson Somerset instead. He came back to football, though, joining the team his junior year of high school. When asked his stats, Coasey relayed that he had 68 tackles, five interceptions and a kick off return for a touchdown. Seeing his skill, FMU offered him the scholarship. The position he was offered to sign for is defensive back, or DB.
De'Trevian Nealy is 20, and is the son of Yolanda Nealy. He has been playing football ever since he started in 2007 and says he can play just about every position on the field. Nealy graduated last year, but, due to COVID-19, wasn't able to sign with FMU until this year. When asked his stats, he couldn't remember them exactly off the top of his head, but he said he had 17 or 18 touchdowns, 2,000 to 3,000 receiving yards and about 1,000 return yards. He got to know about FMU through one of the security personnel at Jefferson Somerset who were friends with a coach at FMU. Apparently, they had coached together, and that security officer is how Nealy came to be known by FMU. Due to COVID-19 hitting, Nealy was able to put a little more thought into if this was really the route he wanted to go. In the end, he decided it was, signing on with FMU for the positions of corner and safety. Congratulations to these two Jefferson Somerset players and their bright futures with FMU!
