Welcome to my inaugural monthly column!
Each month I will provide updates about the School District’s imminent transition as well as other information about our schools. This column is a safe and respectful communication space where I will answer your questions and clarify information about processes, procedures, activities and plans regarding our school system.
Currently, we are working toward transitioning from Somerset Jefferson back to local control. Our goal is by July 1, 2022, to have our schools back under District oversight. There is a lot of hard work ahead of us, especially over the summer; I am excited about digging into this heavy and very important work with staff and community input and my vision for student success guiding the way.
Each day we are working out details with the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) that help inform our plan. For the first school year (2022-2023) we will still operate with some oversight. It is very important that we build a strong long-term plan ensuring that we continue to grow and move forward; going backwards is not an option. FLDOE needs to have confidence that we are making strong fiscal decisions and are ensuring our students are making academic gains.
Not only will we focus on creating strong readers, we will develop our Career Technical Education program for adults in our community as well as for our students. I want to make sure our students have options for career choices, and that they know about those options and have access to training and certification before leaving high school. We will be working with North Florida College and Tallahassee Community College to assist in providing Dual Enrollment options and other key partnerships are in the works.
