I hope your holidays were spent with family and friends, relaxing and enjoying the moments.
This time of year is always a refocusing time when we set resolutions for a new year. Unfortunately, I do not remember ever reaching a resolution, I think because I always made the usual goals: lose weight, save money, spend more time with family, etc., only to find they were just a fleeting thought by February 1st.
These goals are important; however, a few years ago I pondered as to why I never reached them. I discovered that I never connected with the “why” to my resolutions, the part that keeps us focused and working toward meeting them. Most resolutions I made were because my friends made them, or it just seemed like the thing to do. I never sat and pondered the “why.” Why do I want to lose weight or save money or spend more time with family? I encourage you to find your “why” before you make your resolutions. This focus has helped me immensely in many areas of my personal and professional life.
As I reflect on the past year and look forward to 2022, I have been examining why I am here, making the choices that I am making. I wanted to be Jefferson County School District Superintendent so I would be positioned to positively impact the education course for our students and families. They deserve this and so much more.
I want you to know I am still committed to this goal — it drives my thoughts day and night — and my new tack will be more assertive and aggressive. Time is ticking, and this community needs answers. My “why?” Education options and a future full of hope, opportunity and prosperity for our students.
I feel that I have complied with every directive that the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has requested and I have been frequently redirected, often at the last moment, without warning. I am concerned that despite my effort, not much has registered in comparison to the time before I accepted this position. It is time to drill down and get answers, and as we navigate the next few months I will be calling on you for input and support.
FLDOE will be assigning us an oversight company that will allow us to run the District, but with guidance. This is an acceptable step, as I want to make sure we have solid corrective processes and procedures in place so that no matter who is in this seat, the District does not return to the jeopardy that defined us for so many years.
At this juncture, oversight is a good option that will provide us with direction and, hopefully, consistent open communication with the state. FLDOE is working to have this plan finalized by mid-March, and I will keep the community informed.
As always, I welcome you to reach out to me at jcsdsuper@gmail.com with your questions and concerns.
