Don't miss your opportunity to win one of several valuable prizes and help a worthwhile cause at the same time by buying your ticket for a drawing to be held on Monday, Aug. 1. All the money raised will go to help Amber Selman Lé.
Lé is a cancer patient and Madison County High School graduate who is currently living in Colorado. She was the subject of a Friday, June 24, article in the Madison Enterprise-Recorder that detailed her eight-year battle with Sarcomatoid Carcinoma, sometimes called carcinosarcoma, which is a rare type of cancer caused by a mutation between a sarcoma and a carcinogen that affects only two to three cases in every 10 million people.
Because Lé's type of cancer is so rare, finding the right treatment has been difficult. Lé hopes to be able to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where they have some experience in treating this form of cancer. In order to help defray the tremendous cost of the treatment and travel, this fundraiser is taking place.
Numerous local vendors and merchants have donated goods and services to this project. David Wynn, of Clover Hill Showpig Farm, of Madison, is donating a purebred spot pig to be raffled off as one of the prizes. In addition, Jerry Clark, with Limestone Meathouse, 305 Limestone Rd., in Monticello, is donating the processing of the meat. Limestone Meathouse will also be donating two 25-pound packages of sausage, plus 50 pounds of steak, roast and hamburger to be raffled off as prizes.
“The quality of the pork should be first class because of the type of pig and the environment in which it is being raised,” said Wynn. The pork will be ready in October, just in time for Thanksgiving and other holiday family gatherings. “I will put my very best effort into producing the finest pork you have ever had,” added Wynn.
Other prizes to be raffled off include: 50 gallons of gas, courtesy of Elizabeth Waring of Busy Bee; a pair of Disney tickets, also courtesy of Elizabeth Waring. There will also be a huge gift basket which includes lunch/dinner for two at O'Neal's Restaurant, a free facial from BeYOUtiful Spa, a $100 gift certificate from Pepperlune Boutique, courtesy of Valerie Thumbtzen; a newspaper subscription from Greene Publishing, Inc.; a set of books by Tommy Greene; a set of original artwork by Tommy Greene; candles; three one-year garbage pick-up services from Pop’s Sanitation; a two-hour tubing adventure around Cherry Lake, courtesy of Lane Peavy Charters; a custom built tailgate BBQ grill, a custom built family-sized grill and a custom built patio fire pit/oyster steamer, all donated by Pickles and Son Welding; and more. A special “thank you” goes out to JimBob Printing for their generosity in printing the tickets, free of charge.
Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased by calling either Emerald Greene Parsons at (850) 464-0865 or April Taylor at (229) 740-2260. Tickets may also be purchased at the office of Greene Publishing, Inc., Madison County Farm Bureau, Madison Books, Grumpy's, A Main Street Realty, We Insure, Champion Fitness, Madison County Community Bank, Limestone Meathouse in Monticello and the Monticello News. The drawings for these prizes will take place in August. You do not have to be present to win. All winners will be notified.
Lé's family ties to Madison County are deep, with three brothers and a sister living in Madison County: April Taylor, Doug Albritton, Billy Kervin and Travis Kervin. She also has a sister, Ashley Bouplon, of Colorado; Kim Oliver, of Newberry, Fla., and Beth Kervin, of Tampa. Her parents, Mickey and Deborah Kervin, are originally from Lee, as are her grandparents, Robert and Sharon Mendheim. Her father is Bill Selman. Her paternal grandparents are the late Buford and Lucile Selman, of Madison. She is a member of the Class of 2000 at Madison County High School and studied at North Florida Community College.
The family has set up a GoFundMe account, with the hopes of raising at least $25,000.
