“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away,”
- William Shakespeare
To volunteer, or “give away your gift” is an act that connects you to others, yourself, your community and even to your own career. In Jefferson County, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities, and this new weekly series will spotlight some of the ways that locals can get involved and share their gifts with those around them.
Are you looking for a place to volunteer and benefit your community?
The Jefferson Senior Citizen Center (JSCC) is an organization that provides care and ensures a life of well-being for the elderly citizens of the county.
The Center specializes in case management, personal care for the elderly and meal delivery to those who are aged 65 and older. The JSCC also provides necessary equipment, utilities and transportation to its senior clients.
Home care services are also available, which allow seniors to remain in the comfortable environment of their home while still receiving health and medical care as well as assistance with daily tasks.
According to the JSCC Executive Director Audria Flowers, volunteers are especially needed in the area of meal delivery and the packaging of the meals. Volunteers also provide the elderly assistance with eating. Program and activity development are some of the other ways volunteers help, putting together fun activities such as puzzles, jewelry-making and other arts and crafts are among the activities that are appreciated for the seniors.
Volunteers must have a completed background check and will be required to follow safety procedures the government put into place to prevent the spread of COVID, which includes masks and gloves. It is preferred that volunteers be 18-years-old or older, unless the volunteers are in an organized group from a school, for instance, and also accompanied by an adult.
There are no required amount of volunteer-hours and there is no prior experience needed in order to volunteer. The JSCC does track community service hours.
For more information, prospective volunteers should contact Audria Flowers, the center’s executive director.
