Grudges were considerably more deadly affairs in the 19th century than most are today. When it came down to a question of honor, the duel was a long-held tradition that was seen as a surefire way to settle a dispute.
Duels to defend honor have been practiced across history, but particularly in Europe during the Middle Ages, when two offended ones would agree to fight with matching weapons to settle issues involving honor. The duels that were practiced in the United States were descendants of those European duels; the first known duel in the U.S. was in 1621 in Massachusetts and fought with swords.
