The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking the help of Florida citizens and outdoorsmen in estimating the range and population of the black bears in the state.
The Florida Black Bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) was once very common throughout the state, but began to see dwindling numbers in the early to mid-20th century, due to loss of habitat, persecution and unregulated hunting. The FWC classified the black bear as a threatened species in
1974 until 2012, when the species was considered recovered. Although the black bear has shown signs of increased population and range, the FWC continues to closely monitor their numbers through the FWC's Florida Black Bear Management Plan. The Black Bear Management Plan has a goal of maintaining sustainable populations in suitable habitats throughout Florida for the benefit of both the bears and people.
In order to help accomplish this goal, the FWC has devised a program where Floridians can report bear sightings, either in person, or from the many wildlife cameras people have on their property. To report a bear sighting, simply go to https://app.myfwc.com/fwri/blackbear and follow the on-screen instructions.
