Errin Mays is the senior licensed practical nurse (LPN) and licensed vocational nurses (LVN) for the Jefferson County Department of Health. She provides basic medical care; working under the direction of the registered nurses and doctors.
Mays is also the public school nurse and has worked in the nursing profession for 25 years now.
“I have enjoyed working with Errin during the five years I have been at the health department,” notes Pam Beck, the operations manager with the county health department. “She has a great sense of humor and is a pleasure to work with.”
Mays says that her mother was an LPN who worked at the local nursing facilities. As a child, Mays remembers going to work with her mother. Her mom would allow her to do simple things during work, like visit with the residents and such. She enjoyed this kind of work and has always admired her mother for what she did. She is very proud of her mother.
As a young teen, she went on to volunteer at the same facilities that her mom worked at, giving her experience and time to see just what the life of a caregiver could be.
In her youth, Mays wanted to be a veterinarian but as she grew to adulthood she knew, she wanted to be a nurse.
In 1994 she became a medical assistant and in 2006 she became a nurse and in 2014 she became the public school nurse. Her responsibilities are to care for the young students; screen them for scoliosis, weight, triage and such. This is the very best part of her nursing career - caring for the children.
Mays graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1992. She continued her education at Keiser University, Lively Tech College and St. Petersburg College.
She is looking forward to returning to school in the near future, where she plans to study and earn her Registered Nursing degree and continue in the healthcare industry. She aspires to one day operate her own facility, caring for clients in need of her services and abilities.
Mays was born and raised in Jefferson County and is the daughter of Veleta and Ben Mays. She is the mother of four children: Ronzo, Zoron, Errion and Zyrin Wade. She is also the grandmother of Ivy Simone and Jerimiah Wade.
She enjoys watching her son Zoron play football on Saturday's at the FAMU field, as well as watching Zyrin play for Pop Warner. She truly loves spending time with her family and friends though most of her time and energy are spent coaching cheerleaders at Jefferson Somerset, and being the athletic trainer.
Mays says that for now, she will just continue enjoying life. She would like to do more traveling but that will have to wait for later in life.
