In the Christian faith, Holy Week is the week that falls between Palm Sunday and Easter, and is observed with special solemnity as a time of great devotion to the passion of Jesus Christ. The week begins with Palm Sunday, when Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem. The week continues from there, leading through The Last Supper, and the crucifixion, ending on Easter Sunday with Jesus' resurrection. Members of various churches come together in faith during this week to celebrate and recognize Jesus' sacrifice, which launched the New Covenant that God promised that many had prophesied throughout the book of the Old Testament. The dates for Holy Week 2023 are Monday, April 3 through Friday, April 7. Easter is on Sunday, April 9.
This year, the theme for Holy Week is “Following Jesus to the Cross.” Services will tell the story of the cross through the eyes of Judas, Pontus Pilate, Peter, the thief on the cross and Jesus himself. Each service will include a dramatic rendering of the gospel, complete with costumes! Here is this year's service line-up:
Palm Sunday (April 2) through
Good Friday (April 7)
Sunday: lunch at noon for donations
Monday: Judas- performed by Eddie Yon
Tuesday: Peter- performed by Sean Vickers
Wednesday: Pilate- performed by John Hicks
Thursday: Thief on the cross-
performed by Glenn Canup
Friday (Good Friday): Jesus- performed by Jonathon Brewster
Easter service on April 9
Services will be held in the First Methodist Fellowship Hall, located at 325 Walnut St., and will take place from 12 p.m. until 12:30 p.m., followed by a lunch that will be served each day.
