Things are really starting to come together for the homeschool community here in Jefferson County. With their recent upgrade from a simple homeschool group to an organization, they have also started planning activities for their members to take part in. Along with a band, they have also begun art classes, which are being taught by Candi Parker.
The art class is split into two groups, one for the older kids and one for the younger. The lessons are about planning their art piece before beginning and creating a recognizable object in their artwork. They are free to stretch their imaginations and express themselves while learning techniques to do that, such as shapes and shading, ways to “see” what they want to sketch, how to narrow their focus on one thing and painting techniques.
Each week they experiment with a different type of art style or media, such as pointillism, sketching, paintings, mosaics, colored pencil and collages. “We try to have something that is meaningful,” Parker said. “So they have to plan their picture, and these planning processes can then transfer to life, too.”
Once the kids have finished their pieces, they then showcase what they have created. Displaying it in the hallway of their resource center.
