America has a long tradition of honoring veterans, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to thier country. For about a year now, a group of veterans composed of Retired Marine Corp, Major John Haynes, David Wilson (USAF Veteran) and Jamie Meeks (USMC Veteran) has been quietly visiting the graves of some north Florida veterans who lost their lives in service to our country.
Typically, they find out about a particular vet via word of mouth and they will look him up via the internet or with the assistance of the County Veterans Service Office to see where he is buried. Once the location is determined, a visit to the grave follows where the men place a small rock, personalized for the deceased veteran. They note the condition of the grave and if the grave is in need of attention, Minor details are taken to include removal of overgrown grass, leaves, and other debris. While most graves and cemeteries are well maintained, sadly, there are some that have fallen into disrepair and need attention.
It is customary to place a small American flag on the grave of a veteran. In many cemeteries those flags have been knocked over or otherwise damaged. Haynes, Wilson and Meeks will collect the damaged flags and replace them with new ones, before properly disposing of the damaged flags.
