Many know the story of the great flood in the Bible. But some may struggle to relate to this story since we have never witnessed a flood of this magnitude. Here are some lessons we can learn from Noah's story.
God grieves when we sin. At the beginning of the flood story, the Lord sees how wicked the generation of these humans has become and begins to regret making humans. In the days of Noah, the people were so sinful that God's heart became deeply troubled with grief. Just like then, God still grieves when we sin. Like any good Father, God does not appreciate our disobedience when we sin.
God provides a way for us to begin with Him. While God does judge sin, He is also very merciful, loving, and full of grace. God wants a relationship with us and is willing to find a way to provide. God provided a way for Noah and his family by shutting them in the ark. If God can provide for Noah he can and will provide a way for you.
We can trust God. God always sees the bigger picture. The flood story is a great example of trusting in God's plan, even when we don't always understand why. Many people would pass by Noah, jesting or wondering what he was doing. They would laugh because, before the great flood, they had never seen rain. When Noah mentioned there was going to be a great flood, the people thought he was crazy. Even when the people made fun of Noah and his God, Noah never doubted God for a second.
We can obey God no matter what the world says or thinks. Something Noah has in common with people today is that people are judged harshly for believing in God. When Noah was building the ark, people would laugh and insult his God. Throughout this all, Noah still believed in God and obeyed Him. When we believe in God, sometimes the world may not understand.
All things are possible with God. Throughout the Bible, numerous examples show God can do anything. Whether that is raising the dead, having a flood cover the entire earth; etc. Of course, many of us are not faced with the great flood, we have many great floods in our life that God can take care of. Even when we don't always understand Him, God can accomplish anything.
The beginning of the flood story is found in Genesis 6:5.
