While thunderstorms and cancellations were the norm during the weekend of June 16-18, the Howard Academy Class of 1964 had a successful three days of events to include a Meet and Greet on Friday night, Class Picnic at noon on Saturday, the Banquet on Saturday night, and a Class Church Service on Sunday.
Classmates came together from many parts of the country under the theme of “Coming Home in the Summer.” The activities included fun, embraced friendships, spirituality and the memorial of the ones that have reposed during these past 59 years. The class was welcomed by the Honorable Mayor of the City of Monticello, Gloria Cox. Also in attendance was Mr. George Pittman, the Honorary Guest and the only living Principal of Howard Academy High School. The Meet and Greet and the Picnic were held on the West Lake Road at the John Byrd Complex, hosted by a classmate, Mary Byrd, at her residence and “Lizzie Courts” respectively. The Banquet was held at the Monticello Opera House, and the keynote speaker and classmate was Curtis Atkins. The grand finale was the church service held at New Bethel AME Church on the Ashville Highway.
The weather cooperated for the entirety of these events, and the class enjoyed a wonderful weekend with all the participants. The true sentiment of the event was, “It was great to be home for the summer” in Monticello.
