The Howard Academy Class of 1966 held its 53rd High School Reunion on the weekend of Aug. 16-18, at the Jefferson Senior Citizens Center, in Monticello. It was a time of reflection and anticipation for all attending.
High School Principal George W. Pittman, Sr. was in attendance, along with a few of the teaching staff, including Celestine and Albert Thomas, Dr. Willie Tillman Williams and Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hughes.
Dr. Williams was an English teacher at Howard Academy in the 1960s. He later became an Associate Professor of English at FAMU. He's now enjoying retirement.
Dr. Hughes taught biology and chemistry at Howard Academy in the 1960s. He later taught at Taylor County High School and retired as Supervisor of Secondary Education for the Taylor County School District.
The weekend reunion began on Friday evening with a welcome from classmate John R. Nelson, Sr., and a meet-and-greet of classmates and friends. A candle lighting was held as the former classmates remembered those who had passed away; a total of 28 names were called out during this quiet and solemn service.
Afterward, dinner was served and announcements were made. Music and dancing from the 1960s followed.
On Saturday evening, classmate Eddie Gallon welcomed and thanked all those who had gathered to attend this weekend reunion. Special guests were recognized, announcements were made and the meal was served. Keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Lawrence Hughes, Jr., The Alma Mater was sung in unison and a night of music, dancing, fun and fellowship continued.
A Sunday morning worship service was held at Union Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Wacissa, where Rev. Joseph Love serves as the pastor. Speaker was Assistant Pastor Minnie Jordan Robinson, a member of the graduating class of 1966.
Seventy-seven names of classmates were listed on the Howard Academy Class of 1966 High School Reunion program.
