Hurricane slams Big Bend for second time

For the second time in just under a year, a hurricane made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region, and once again, Jefferson County was largely spared the worst of the storm. Even so, the county saw its share of tumbled trees, flooded roads and downed power lines.
Hurricane Debby, which the National Hurricane Center (NHC) classified as a category-1 storm, made landfall near Steinhatchee in Taylor County at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The storm was accompanied with torrential rains and high velocity winds that reportedly were responsible for the death of four people in Florida and one in Georgia.
