James F. Ward, Jr., age 77, of Monticello, FL passed away on November 22, 2018, at his home. He was born in Centralia, IL to James F. Ward, Sr. and Thelma Marie Ward. He grew up and graduated high school in Jacksonville, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Hampton Ward, originally of Galax, VA. He leaves behind two sons, James Ward III (wife Tina) of Raleigh, NC and Timothy Ward (wife Connie) of Tallahassee, FL. He also had six grandchildren, Roselyn Ward of Tallahassee; Samuel Ward of Raleigh, NC; Jason Ward; Travis Ward; Conner Ward and Dylan Ward all of Tallahassee. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sue Ward of Jacksonville, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Arthur Ward, of Jacksonville, and a grandson, James F. Ward IV, of Tallahassee.
Mr. Ward loved his country and served faithfully as a Chief Petty Officer for 22 years in the United States Navy. He served during the Vietnam War a Casualty Notification Officer. He received recognition for his military participation in the funeral procession of the late President John F. Kennedy.
After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Ward owned and operated a business in the Tallahassee area for many years. Being a life-long Southern Baptist, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello. He previously served as a deacon for many years.
A graveside service was held on Monday, November 26, at 1 p.m. at the Oakfield Cemetery in Monticello. Pastor Sean Vickers of the First Baptist Church of Monticello officiated the service. Beggs Funeral Home of Monticello handled the arrangements.
