As part of the 2025 Celebrate Literacy Week in Florida, Jefferson County K-12 Community Partnership School (JCS) invited community and school leaders to engage with students on Guest Readers’ Day, which took place on Thursday, Feb, 13. Each guest went to a different preschool or elementary classroom to read a pre-selected book.
Guest readers this year included School Board Member Beth Frisby, Assistant Principal KristinWilson, School Board Member Mags Flynt, Valerie Brown, Ana McGlamory, County Commissioner Gene Hall, Judge Bobby Plaines, Investigator Richard Thomas, Trinity James, Fire Chief Derrick Burrus, Sheriff Mac McNeil, Pastor Eddie Yon, Tyler Vojtasek, Monticello Woman's Club President Cecil Barnhart, Planning Commissioner David Wheeler, County Commissioner Austin Hosford, Susan Taylor, Rev. Terry Presley, Desmond Whitfield, Property Appraiser Angela Gray, Business Owner Patrick Figueroa, Monticello Police Chief Fred Mosley, Principal Marlon Ball, Community Partnership School Director Lori Livingston and Assistant Principal Allyn Howard.
Many of the stories touched on this year's Literacy Week theme, “Constructing the Foundation for Success.” Books read at this event included “Dreaming Up: A Celebration of Building,” “Beautiful Oops” “Winners Never Quit,” “We Are the Builders,” “Stephanie's Ponytail,” “Bad Kitty: School Daze,” “The Adventures of Beekle: the Unimaginary Friend,” “Little House on the Prairie” and “Our School Is a Family,” “A Door Made for Me” and “The Storm Runners, Book 1.”
Each student received a copy of the book that was read to their class to take home. Putting books into the home in this way supports the “Jefferson Reads” program, a year-round literacy effort that encourages families to read with their children every evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Guest readers on the morning of the 13th and anyone in the community who reads with a child any evening is encouraged to take a picture and post it to #JeffersonReads.
