Both boys and girls soccer teams at Jefferson County K-12 (JCS) showed a lot of growth this year and reached the semi-finals in the district tournaments.
During the regular season, the girls soccer team achieved second place in the district, allowing them to have a bye week for the quarterfinals and automatically advance to the semifinal round of the district tournament. The girls district tournament was hosted at Lafayette High School in Mayo, Fla. Although the team lost to Bell High School 0-1, the team had never made it to the semi-finals before, so Coach Blambie Fils considers it an important accomplishment. Wanda Gabriel assisted Fils with coaching, and the players on the girls team were Gabby Bay, Finley Boyd, Maggie Boyd, Sandy Le, Gigi Mediate, Alajandra Nogal, Loryn Salmon, Liria Vargas, Bertha Velazquez, Naydelin Velazquez, Sherlin Velazquez, Cameron Vojtasek.
“The team has had to play with no substitute or been short players in multiple games,” commented Fils, “and they still managed to have a great season.”
The boys soccer tournament, coached by Wilmer Gabriel, was ranked fifth heading into their district tournament, which was hosted by St. Francis Catholic Academy in Gainesville, Fla. In the quarterfinals, the boys played against St. Francis and won, 3-1. They then advanced to the semifinal round and lost 2-7 against Bell High School (ranked #1 in the district). Players on the boys team were Ivan Aviles, Charles Boyd, Domingo Diego, Jesus Gomez, Adolfo Jiminez, Caleb King, Preston King, Emilio Olivares, Leonardo Olivares, Jovanny Perez, Manuel Preza, Daniel Rosas, Jose Santillan, Miguel Zapeta, Saul Zelaya.
Congratulations to the soccer program at JCS for an exciting and rewarding season.
