Jefferson County Tigers' track season got underway on Feb. 18, and now, at about the halfway mark, the team is looking strong. As of March 2, the team ranked #15 out of 51 teams in Division 1A, and their top runner, Junior Delvin Chambers, was ranked 35th in the state.
Coach Marsaun Harris, who is in his fifth year coaching track for the Tigers, is excited to have a high level of participation this year. He's working with 25 students on the boys team and 21 students on the girls roster.
The Tigers had many notable results for individual runners and team relays in the finals at the March 4 Sunshine State Officials Meet hosted by FSU High. Seventh-grader Keion Enzor placed first in the Boys 1600 Meter Run, with teammates N'Kansa Langhorn placing seventh and Breshawn Bellamy placing eighth in the same race. Senior Randy Walker placed first in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles. Senior Juvon Pettway placed third in the Boys 100 Meter Dash; and in the Boys 800 Meter Run, junior Amhad Walker placed fourth and junior Taveon Enzer placing seventh. The JCS relay teams placed fourth in the Boys 4X100 Meter Relay, second in the 4X400 Meter Relay and first in the 4X800 Meter Relay. In the Boys Long Jump, Jovontrez Bellamy placed first and Geondre Pittman placed eighth. In Boys Discus, Jason Mosley took sixth place and Randy Walker eighth place. In Javelin, Randy Walker took fourth and Jason Mosley took fifth. Mosley also took fifth place in the Boys Shot Put.
In the girls events, Christina Walker had an impressive showing, with first place in the 100 Meter Dash, and fourth place in the 200 Meter Dash, Long Jump and Shot Put. Teammate Liria Vargas took second place in the 400 Meter Hurdles.
At Tuesday's Freshman Sophomore Championship hosted by Chiles High School, Jovontrez Bellamy was fifth out of more than 50 runners in both the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. In the 800 Meter Run, Keion Enzor and Geondre Pittman finished two seconds apart, placing 17 and 18, respectively. Keion Enzor also took 18th place in the 1600 Meter Run. In the Long Jump, Jovontrez Bellamy took third place and N'Kansa Langhorn placed 15th. In girls events, Liria Vargas placed sixth in the 100 Meter Hurdles, fifth in the 400 Meter Hurdles and 17th in the Shot Put.
Coach Harris says, “Daily I preach the pursuit of excellence, meaning that every day we prepare to excel in all that we do, reminding them why not them? why not leave a legacy of greatness? Our season mantra is those who endure, shall reign. I am elated to be able the coach this cohort of athletes we have here at Jefferson and will continue to pour into them on and off the track.”
The Tigers next compete again this afternoon, March 10, in the Tariqu Barfield Invitational, followed by four more regular season meets. You can see the Tiger track team in action at the Tiger Track on April 14, when they host the Harry Jacobs Invitational.
