This week kicked off the Jefferson Tiger's football season with a challenging first game against the Trenton Tigers. Jefferson County has a lot to prove after coming off last year's season.
Coach Ira Reynolds and his staff lead Jefferson onto the field, ready to battle it out on the gridiron. Once the Friday lights came on, his boys stepped onto the field; all of their hard work and practice would show. Many teams believed that Jefferson County would be an easy win, including Trenton, but Coach Reynolds and his boys told a different story giving Trenton their money's worth.
On the offensive side of the ball, Jazavius Hawkins was the star of the show. Having three receptions for 107-yards and one touchdown, but it did not stop there for Hawkins. Trenton could not find a way to stop him as he touched the ball on the ground 11 times and carried it for 125-yards, scoring two touchdowns. Trenton had no answer for Hawkins, as every time he got the ball, big things happened. Hawkins even showed that no one is safe from his speed as he darted around Trenton's kickoff team, scoring once again. This just proved that Jefferson's “strikers” are ready at any time to score on any defense. With Jefferson's defense, teams better watch out for N'jay Casey. With 16 tackles, 10 of those being solo, no one is safe from him. Casey's one objective is to stop anyone with the football, and that is just what he did. He had six assist tackles and caused a forced fumble.
After a hard-fought battle between the two tigers, the dust settled, and Trenton had inched away, winning by six points. Jefferson County made a crucial mistake on their last drive and fumbled, causing Trenton to get the stop and win the game 34 to 28.
Even though Jefferson is coming off this loss, it was an excellent opener for the home team. It showed that the team has been working hard and is giving everything they have to pull out a winning season. Once the players and coaches fix the few mistakes made this week, you will see a new and improved team ready for battle against Port St. Joe Sharks, at the home game this Friday, September 9.
