On Sunday, Oct. 29, just before 5 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to a wreck in Wakulla County involving two vehicles. FHP was assisted at the scene by the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, Wakulla EMS and Wakulla Fire Rescue.
According to the crash report, an SUV, driven by 59 year-old Stephen Walker of Monticello, was traveling west on U.S. Hwy 98, also referred to as Coastal Highway, approaching the intersection at Spring Creek Highway. A pickup truck, driven by a 31 year-old man from Tallahassee, was traveling north on Spring Creek Highway, approaching the intersection at US Hwy. 98. The pickup truck failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection, colliding with the driver's side of Walker's SUV. Both vehicles came to a final rest in the northwest corner of the intersection.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. Stephen Walker was transported via life-flight to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (TMH), where he was pronounced dead. Walker was born and raised in the Waukeena area, and served as County Commissioner for District 5 since 2012.
