Below is the letter County Commissioner
Gene Hall sent to the FDOT, District 3
District Secretary Gainer:
When will FDOT install some speed bumps, speed humps, or rumble strips to calm down traffic that goes around the Monticello-Jefferson County courthouse? Some drivers are speeding around that circular corridor as though they are at the Indianapolis 500 raceway.
I have to question whether the aforementioned roadway meets the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Citizens and visitors in our rural county are living longer and many of them already have physical, social-emotional, and other health impairments that qualify for ADA protections.
As you are well aware, there have already been pedestrians that have been injured and some even killed while crossing streets in Monticello. Those traffic calming devices when properly installed will really mitigate the likelihood of more of these type accidents to occur in the future. Safety first.
Please install some speed bumps, speed humps, and or rumble strips around the street (intersection of U. S. 19 and Mahan Drive) that surrounds our courthouse circle.
Merci beaucoup,
Gene Hall
Jefferson County Commissioner
