Jefferson County has now recorded its fourth COVID-19 death and a new case of the disease.
On Tuesday, June 9, Pam Gilleland-Beck, public information officer for the Florida Department of Health in Jefferson (FDOH-Jefferson), reported the death of a 96-year-old man who had earlier been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
“We would like to express our condolences to his family and loved ones,” Gilleland-Beck said.
On Saturday, June 13, Gilleland-Beck reported a new case of COVID-19, a 16-month-old girl.
To date, Jefferson County has 32 confirmed cases, eight of whom are hospitalized.
The FDOH-Jefferson, meanwhile, continues conducting community-based testing at selected sites throughout the county.
The initiative, named the “Join the Two-Percent Club in June,” aims to test two percent of the county's population by June 30. As of Monday, June 15, the department had tested 936 persons, of whom 903 tested negative. The 32 who tested positive represent 3.4 percent, which the department calls within the target range.
In the last week, Florida has recorded its highest-ever seven-day averages of new coronavirus cases, according to the state's own COVID-19 Data and Surveillance Dashboard.
As of Monday evening, June 15, Florida had 77,326 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 12,015 were hospitalized and 2,938 had resulted in death.
Statewide, 1,431,164 people had been tested, with 1,352,858 testing negative and 5.4 percent testing positive, according to the FDOH.
Nationally, the count stood at 2,114,026 confirmed cases and 116,127 deaths.
