Jefferson Somerset students honored veterans on Friday, November 9 with lunch and a Salute to the Armed Forces program in the school library.
Yu'Nijha Cooper began by sharing with her audience 'What is Veterans Day.' Elijah Bellamy announced the posting of colors and the pledge to the flag. Mya Trammell sang the National Anthem and Jamichael Steen offered the invocation.
Elijah Bellamy then introduced the winners of the 'What is a Veteran' essay winners. They are Tyler Canale, first place; Kaitlyn Johnson, second place; and Kaleb Macon, third place. Kaitlyn and Kaleb were then invited to read their essays to the veterans in the audience.
Teacher Twynetta Howard's first grade class (Sudiksha Kolluru, Javarion Ulee and Reign Carillo) came to the front of the room, and in front of the veterans to recite their 'Soldiers Care Package'. The elementary students then came up front with song and sign and hugs and praises for the veterans. They were spectacular and received a standing ovation.
A salute to the Armed Forces in the way of music was played with veterans from each branch of the service standing when they heard their song of military service.
Closing remarks and an invitation to stay for lunch was offered by Yu'Nijha Cooper before ending the program.
