John Phillip Shealey Sr. of Corydon, Iowa, and previously of Monticello, Fla., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2022, at his home in Corydon.
Phil was born on October 15, 1946, in Dothan, Ala., to the late Staff Sgt. Daniel Wesley and Mildred Shealey. After his father retired from the Air Force, the family settled in Monticello to be near family.
He was a graduate of JCHS, NFJC and FSU. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller and was stationed in Tampa and the Philippines. He retired from the State of Florida, Department of Labor, in 2006. He was a member of Hiram Lodge and a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church before moving to Indiana and Iowa.
Phil enjoyed life to the fullest and loved books, canoeing and especially sailing. He also liked collecting unique lighthouses. When he could no longer take care of his sailboat, he donated it to the Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Crista Wood Shealey; son, Dr. John Phillip Shealey Jr. (Jen), of Corydon, Iowa; daughter, Katherine Shealey Norwood (Christopher), of Russellville, Ark.; sister, Gwen Myers, of Davenport, Fla.; five grandchildren, Savannah Pardue, Peyton Shealey, Mikeala Norwood, Jennifer Norwood and Matthew Norwood; two nieces, Amber Blaustein of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Holly Acree of Lake Wales, Fla.; beloved aunt, Jean Shealey Reeves, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and many special cousins.
Visitation will be at Beggs Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Roseland Cemetery at 1 p.m. Officiating will be Dr. David Walker, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, and family member, Pastor Mike Teston.
