The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deserves all credit for the good they do for the Monticello community. However, there are a few members that don’t receive as much recognition as they should, but they don’t mind, as long as they get their tennis ball rewards.
The JCSO has been successfully using K9s for many years, and they have recently added a new team member to the force. Peppe has joined his colleagues as the third K9 on the JSCO force. He has been part of the team for just a few weeks and specializes in the detection of narcotics. Peppe spent six weeks in training at Southern Coast K9 in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Peppe can be used on traffic stops or other complaints, and each time he does his job and locates narcotics, he is rewarded with a fresh tennis ball.
Peppe’s much larger and more intimidating co-workers, Otis and Magnum, are also trained to detect narcotics. Otis, the 110 pound Black Shepherd has been part of the force for the last year and a half. He is handled by Dustin Matthews, who has been working for the JCSO for the last 9 years and has handled a K9 for two years.
Magnum, the 70 pound Belgium Malinois, is much calmer, smaller and faster than Otis. He is handled by Dustin McCoy, who began working for the JCSO in 2016.
Both Otis and Magnum are used for traffic stops when the deputy suspects narcotics in the vehicle. They are also used when the deputies are unable to locate the narcotics in a household. Like Peppe, Otis and Magnum are also rewarded with tennis balls. However, they don’t let the balls distract them from getting their jobs done.
