Kez McCorvey, currently the North Florida director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), addressed the ecumenical Monticello Community Prayer Breakfast crowd on Thursday, Nov. 4. at First Baptist Church of Monticello. McCorvey engagingly shared his journey from playing small-town high school football to becoming a standout wide receiver for Florida State University to being drafted into the National Football League by the Detroit Lions.
An injury that led to him being dropped from the roster also, he shared, led him to the Christian faith, where he felt that being loved did not depend on how well he performed as an athlete. McCorvey still pursues high goals but now with a focus on the impact that showing Christ's love to others can have in their lives. He is looking forward to working through FCA with schools throughout North Florida, including Jefferson County.
The program began with a blessing by Rev. Sean Vickers, pastor at the First Baptist Church of Monticello. Mike Grisham of Gideon's International led the Pledge of Allegiance and then sang “Sweet Beulah Land,” inviting the 40 or more attendees to join in the chorus at the end. Rev. Ron Cichon led the prayer for the sick and distressed.
It was announced that all are invited to a community Thanksgiving service on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 325 Walnut St.
The next Monticello Community Prayer Breakfast will be on Thursday, Dec. 2, at Christ Episcopal Church Parrish Hall, 425 N. Cherry St.

Wright, who organizes the monthly gatherings, says, “The Monticello Community Prayer Breakfast is not affiliated with any Church. It is a spiritual idea that continues to survive the challenges of today's society because of its community support and individual participation.”
