Leaping in and layering on autumn leaves

The first official day of autumn lands on Sept. 22 this year. That's the day in our calendar when the sun will be positioned directly over the earth's equator. This celestial event – the autumnal equinox – marks the halfway point between the summer and winter solstices, and for a brief moment day and night will be of equal length. Hooray and hello Fall! The next few months are among the most enjoyable in our region, and I think Winnie the Pooh captures my sentiments about the upcoming equinox well when he says, “It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!â
