August has just begun, and now, it's a time known to Florida residents as the peak of the back-to-school season. With less than two weeks until school starts in most of the state's counties, school is on many people's minds.
The history of education is a rich one; institutions of learning have existed for thousands of years. Ancient societies in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China and many other places recognized a need for an education dedicated to the development of literacy, culture and thought. Literacy was seen as a particularly important skill, as those who possessed it could serve important roles in society, such as scribes.
