Legislators asked to name part of State Road 59 after late military hero

Jefferson County officials recently acted to honor longtime resident and military hero Major John Leroy Haynes, who passed away on Nov. 14.
On Thursday evening, Dec. 7, the Jefferson County Commission readopted a proclamation calling on state lawmakers to name a local section of State Road 59 in honor of Haynes.
Several of Haynes’ friends, family members and contemporaries attended the brief ceremony in
the commission chambers. At which event, Sheriff Mac McNeill, who called the late war hero a dear friend, read the proclamation, as well as presented an honorary U.S. flag to Haynes’ daughter, Susan Haynes-Carabello.
