Lester W. Oglesby, 91, known to family and friends as Kaiser, died Monday, April 20, 2020.
He was born in Mayo, Fla., as one of eight children, and moved with his family to Monticello, Fla. in the 1930s.
He served his country in the U.S. Army on the front lines of battle in Korea.
He retired from Florida Power Corporation after a 42-year career. He was a faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Monticello for 50 years.
For his first 30 years, he was popular, fun-loving and care-free - enjoying sports, boating, skiing, friendships and play. His second 30 years were devoted to his first wife Carolyn Ward Oglesby and their four children: Bret Oglesby, Blair Oglesby, Melinda Oglesby (Wade McDaniel) and Melissa Oglesby. After the death of his first wife, he married Betty Poole Oglesby and welcomed into his family her children: Debra Sauls (John Sauls) and Joey Bell (Cathy) Bell. His last 30 years were spent enjoying retirement with Betty, time with family and friends, and being grandfather to Cody and Zack Bell, and Danielle and Brandon Sauls.
He is survived by his wife Betty; all of his children and grandchildren; a sister, Lessie Oglesby Harrell; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He never met a stranger and always greeted with a smile and wave, a handshake or hug. He will be greatly missed and will be remembered as a trusted and loyal friend; a loving and giving brother; husband, father and grandfather; a devout Christian; and a kind, caring soul. He had a good, full life well lived.
During these difficult, unprecedented times of social distancing, the family regrets that there will be no public funeral or opportunity for visitation. If you feel moved to give something to honor and celebrate his life, please make a contribution in his name to the First Baptist Church of Monticello (his home away from home), or to Big Bend Hospice, who provided him with compassionate care during his final days.
