Over 20 adults volunteered their time during the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 28 in order to read aloud to several grades of students at Jefferson Somerset.
The guest-reader session was part of the school's week-long celebration on literacy and is an annual tradition that many students and volunteers alike look forward to.
This year, the volunteers came from all over the county – some were local law enforcement officers, judges, firefighters, retired teachers, current teachers or just community members who wanted to make an impact on the lives of young students.
The school's Literacy Week began on Monday, Jan. 27 with a “Crazy Socks Day” and continued on the following Tuesday for a guest reader visit.
Near 9 a.m., the guest readers gathered in the school's main lobby, excitedly waiting to hear which classroom they would be visiting and reading to.
Before the reading could begin, each volunteer was presented with their book and led to the classroom by a student guide.
From there, the readers excitedly plunged their classroom audience into the realm of storytelling, with the variety of books encompassing all sorts of tales! From the schoolyard humor of Dairy of a Wimpy Kid to the classic tale of a mischievous monkey in Curious George, there was plenty of varying reading material for the different classrooms.
To the guest readers who volunteered their time, Nancy Benjamin, Anita Ashworth, Judge Bobby Plaines, Fire Rescue Chief Derrick Burrus, Jefferson Somerset Elementary Principal Courtney Oliver, Nicole Roddenberry, Chief of Police Fred Mosley, Dr. Denise Robinson, Chamber of Commerce Director Katrina Richardson, School Board member Shirley Washington, Nicky Seaton, Lanetra Cook, Earlene Knight, Stephanie Roberts, Debbie Cordle, Mary Madison, School Superintendent Marianne Arbulu, SRO Deputy Dorian Bradley and Shirrie Barany, thank you for taking a moment to sit with young students and share with them the joy of reading.
