Several members of local veteran groups were on-hand to help with the cleanup at the Boots Thomas Veterans Memorial site, on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Though there wasn't much cleanup that needed to be done, the group of veterans visited and discussed plans and arrangements for the Iwo Jima anniversary event that had been planned on Friday, Feb. 21. The event will be held in remembrance of the first flag placed on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, and for honoring Sgt. Ernest “Boots” Thomas, one of the men who helped to place the flag and a child of Jefferson County.
It has been 75 years since the ending of WWII.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 at the memorial site, 930 W. Washington St. in Monticello.
Memorial Bricks will be for sale during the event. The event will be professionally recorded and photographs will be taken for posterity.
