“What you give to life returns to you,” is the maxim of Jefferson County native son Sam Madison, Jr. Throughout Sam's National Football League career, he has dedicated himself to becoming an ambassador of goodwill to his family, friends, peers and worthy causes. He has always felt a responsibility to give back to the communities he resides in and grew up in and which he loves.
His humanitarianism began at the end of his first season playing for the Miami Dolphins, and he returned home to an enthusiastic fan base. He loaded his truck with treats and memorabilia, parked in front of his grandmother's residence in The Project and proceeded to hand out the amenities, sign autographs and pump up the music as he embraced the generous welcome.
In 1999 he started the Madison Avenue for Kids non-profit organization. The foundation's mission is to motivate and inspire youth and their families to achieve a better way of life through educational, social and economic empowerment. In 2003 he established his Educational Partnership Rally that brought in motivational speakers to inspire the youth, parents and general public. Fast forward to 2008, he implemented his hair cut and school supplies endeavor. This is the 14th year, minus the pandemic years, of offering this foremost event.
The action will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, at the Jefferson Teen Center, located at 555 Tiger Lane. The time is set for 7 a.m.. This is a first come, first served activity. Kendrick Norton, Sr., who has been the barber at this event for a decade, will perform the cuts.
