In March, the Jefferson Senior Citizens Center (JSCC) welcomed a new director to its leadership staff as Audria Flowers joined the team as the center's executive director.
According to Flowers, before she became the JSCC director, she had walked into the center one day to ask a question of the senior center's staff.
The simple question-asking session resulted in Flowers getting involved in the center as a volunteer, and from there, she eventually applied for the executive director position.
But this, Flowers says, was not her first experience in volunteering for an organization such as the JSCC; since she was young, Flowers has been involved as a volunteer at different agencies in Leon County and Gadsden County.
She is also equipped to handle the role of executive director due to her educational experience.
Flowers holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Political Science from the Florida A&M University (saying that her original career goal was to be a lawyer). She also has a Masters in Education and has previously worked as a teacher in Gadsden County as well as a Health Promotions Manager for another non-profit organization.
“I have a passion for children and the elderly populations,” explains Flowers.
Still, the Jefferson Senior Citizens Center is special, Flowers says.
“This is the first time that I have walked into a building and knew that I was supposed to be here, working for the seniors,” explains Flowers. 'I knew that I was led to know and appreciate this group of people out of all the people in the world.”
As the new head of leadership at the center, Executive Director Audria Flowers has plans to implement new programs as well as continue the reliable service that Jefferson County's senior citizens have come to depend upon.
While she guides the center, Flowers says she would like to see more live music provided for the center's visitors and clients and she'd like to expand the exercise programs; she also wants to continue to see hot meals being provided to the center's senior clients, saying that “sometimes, the smallest things mean so much to others.”
“JSCC is special because it has purpose. The seniors here love the center and the people who are a part of the center love the seniors. The center is malleable and [longs] to thrive, and the sky is the limit,” adds Flowers. “I am proud to learn a lot from them, as I imprint loyalty and dedication to them.”
