Shofner was mostly raised in Gadsden County and Mobile, Ala., He has lived in Jefferson County since the 90s, when he came here to help start the local Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. He earned an associate in arts degree from the University of Texas, though he completed his classes at least four or five different colleges across the country. Ironically, he earned his degree from the University of Texas while he was living in Alaska. Shofner served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years.
