The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was established at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., as a grave and memorial for unidentified American soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service to their country.
American troops have had unidentified fallen soldiers in wars dating back to the Civil War, and in December of 1920, veteran and New York Congressman Hamilton Fish Junior proposed legislation to address that issue. Public Resolution 67 of the 66th Congress proposed to bring home one unidentified soldier from World War I, with the purpose of bringing a soldier home who typifies the soul of America and the supreme sacrifice of her heroic dead.
