David Earl Merritt, 83, of Monticello, Fla., passed away at home on Friday, April 10, 2020, following an extended illness.
Earl was born on Aug. 26, 1936, in Graceville, Fla. He was the son of William Christopher and Etta Kellum Merritt. Earl was a graduate of Jefferson County High School, class of 1955. After graduating, he moved to Tallahassee where he met his wife Johnnie. They married in 1963 and were married for 57 years. He was an active member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Earl loved to travel and accomplished a tour of all 50 states. He also traveled outside of the U.S. to several different countries.
Earl was preceded in death by both of his parents: William Christopher and Etta Merritt; his sisters: Lottie Crosby, Ruby Vinson and Eunice Ratliff; and his brother, James Merritt.
Earl is survived by his wife, Johnnie Harrington Merritt; two sons: Chris (Linda) Merritt and Keith Merritt; three grandchildren: Erin, Cameron and Sean Merritt; sister, Bonnie Wilder; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Elizabeth Baptist Church on April 10, 2021, at 10 a.m.
