Mildred C. Wimberly of Monticello passed into her heavenly home on Oct. 26, 2021, in Tallahassee, Fla.
A native of Danville, Ga., she had resided in Monticello since 1946. She was the daughter of David Cain Coley and Lottie Coley and was born on Oct. 9, 1921. At age 7 her father passed into his heavenly home. Mildred went to live with her aunt in Atlanta, where she lived and worked until 1945. Her mother later remarried L.N. Nobles of Danville, Ga.
During her time in Atlanta, she worked for Southern Bell as a telephone operator and went to Business College at night. She and her cousin, Dave Coley, visited troops returning from the war in the Lawson General Hospital. There she was introduced to her future husband Thomas S. (“Sut”) Wimberly of Cochran, Ga. He had been injured while serving in the 50th Parachute Infantry Regiment in North Africa as part of Operation TORCH and subsequently returned to the hospital in Atlanta. She and Sut soon realized that they knew each other from grade school and began a courtship. On Oct. 21, 1945, they were married at the Cochran Methodist Church.
In 1946, they set up residence in Monticello, Fla., and she took a job as a bookkeeper at the Johnston’s Locker Plant in Monticello. She soon started working as the chief bookkeeper for the Production Credit Association which ultimately was renamed as Farm Credit Service. She later retired from Farm Credit in 1987. Mildred and Sut reared two children in Monticello, David and Elaine.
Mildred was preceded in death by her father, David Coley; mother, Lottie Coley Nobles; stepfather, L.N. Nobles; and a half-brother, Bobby Nobles (and wife, Agnes Nobles).
Mildred is survived by husband, Sut Wimberly; son, David Wimberly (Lynette); daughter, Elaine Wimberly Whittington (Gregory); three grandchildren: Justin Wimberly, Amelia Wimberly Brodeur (Dave) and Jacob Whittington; as well as five great grandchildren: Kelly Brodeur (Jocelyn), August Brodeur, McKayla Wimberly, Seth Wimberly and Henry David Wimberly; two great great-grandchildren: Keegan and Kohen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mildred was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Monticello from July 7, 1946, to October 26, 2021. She was one of the oldest surviving members before she passed. Sut, from his youth, was a member of Longstreet Methodist Church and later First Methodist Church of Monticello. He and his son, David became members of First Baptist Church on March 24, 1963. Daughter Elaine became a member of First Baptist Church on Jan.17, 1971. Mildred was a long-time member of the WMU, LLL and Sunday School. She was a devout Christian lady with many friends in Monticello. She was a wonderful wife to her husband, Sut for 76 years and a fantastic mother to David and Elaine.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. She will be interred at the Tallahassee National Cemetery. Lifesong in Tallahassee is assisting the family with arrangements.
