Mildred C. Wimberly of Monticello passed into her heavenly home on Oct. 26, 2021, in Tallahassee, Fla. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Monticello.
A native of Danville, Ga., she had resided in Monticello since 1946. She was the daughter of David Cain Coley and Lottie Coley and was born on Oct. 9, 1921. At age seven her father passed into his heavenly home. Mildred went to live with her aunt in Atlanta, where she lived and worked until 1945. Her mother later remarried L.N. Nobles of Danville, Ga.
During her time in Atlanta, she worked for Southern Bell as a telephone operator and went to Business College at night. She and her cousin, Dave Coley, visited troops returning from the war in the Lawson General Hospital. There she was introduced to her future husband Thomas S. (“Sut”) Wimberly of Cochran, Ga. He had been injured while serving in the 50th Parachute Infantry Regiment in North Africa as part of Operation TORCH and subsequently returned to the hospital in Atlanta. She and Sut soon realized that they knew each other from grade school and began a courtship. On Oct. 21, 1945, they were married at the Cochran Methodist Church.
In 1946, they set up residence in Monticello, Fla. and she took a job as a Bookkeeper at the Johnston’s Locker Plant in Monticello. She soon started working as the Chief Bookkeeper for the Production Credit Association, which ultimately was renamed as Farm Credit Service. She later retired from Farm Credit in 1987. Mildred and Sut reared two children in Monticello: David and Elaine.
