While flipping through the pages of my 1872 copy of Dr. Chase's Recipes or Information for Everybody, a 19th-century guide on making sweets, medicines, lacquer, and everything else imaginable, I found a recipe in the baking section that piqued my interest.
It was recipe no. 8, Ginger Cake. Spiced baked goods are a classic staple of autumn and winter cooking, and, in my opinion, the perfect way to usher in the cozier months.
