Second-term Councilwoman Gloria Cox is Monticello’s new mayor.
Cox’s colleagues elected her to the position on Tuesday evening, Jan. 3, replacing longtime Mayor Julie Conley, who was elected vice-major. The council traditionally chooses a new mayor and vice mayor at its first meeting after the New Year.
The mayor position, which is largely honorary, typically rotates among the council members, although a few have held it for a number of years. The mayor’s vote counts the same as the other council members’, but the person holding the office gets to represent the city at civic, political and ceremonial events.
First elected to the council in 2018, Cox ran unopposed in the last election. She represents Group 2 on the council and serves on the budget committee.
A former Jefferson County School District employee, she is also an ordained minister.
Earlier in the evening, Cox was sworn into office by Judge Bobby Plaines, as was
Group 1 Councilman George Evans, who also was unopposed in the last election.
