Police Chief Fred Mosley was duly recognized at the Monticello City Council meeting last week for his long and dedicated service to the city.
Captain Jack Pitts, with the Monticello Police Department (MPD), did the honors, presenting the chief with a plaque commemorating his 30 years of service to the city.
Mosley, according to Pitt’s presentation, began his city career in 1984 as a utilities worker and heavy equipment operator. Which jobs he performed diligently for eight years, while also volunteering as a firefighter and earning the rank of lieutenant in the volunteer fire department.
In 1992, Mosley left the city’s employment and went to work as a deputy in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). His stint with the JCSO didn’t last very long, however. After only two weeks with the department, Mosley resigned and returned to the city, this time as a police officer.
Mosley worked his way through the ranks of the MPD over the years, rising from patrol officer to sergeant, lieutenant, deputy police chief and finally police chief in 2007, after former Police Chief David Frisby retired.
Throughout his police career, Mosley has exhibited professionalism and community service and participated in numerous civic and law-enforcement organizations. The latter include the National Police Chiefs’ Association, Domestic Violence Task Force, SHIP Housing Board, Monticello Fund Pension Board, Fraternal Order of Police and Department of Juvenile Justice Board.
He has also been a member of Toastmasters, the Opera House Board of Trustees and the Jefferson County R. J. Bailar Public Library Board of Directors.
“Chief Mosley has saved the citizens of Monticello tens of thousands of tax dollar, either by grants, donated items or acquiring other departments’ surplus goods,” Pittman said.
The chief, he said, exemplified the mission of the MPD, which he described as an agency that existed for the citizens of Monticello and not for officers’ self-aggrandizement or glory.
Following the brief presentation, the MPD officers and staff joined Mosley for a group photograph in the council chamber, as did his wife, Gloria.
