The USDA Commodities Food Program and Second Harvest Food Bank recently partnered together with the churches of New Bethel AME, Mt. Pleasant AME, Elizabeth MB, Hickory Hill MB and Philadelphia MB.
The purpose of the partnership was to hold a food-giveaway on Saturday morning, March 28. The giveaway provided fresh fruit, vegetables and dry food items to those who needed food assistance.
The event was well-attended, with vehicles lining up in front of the New Bethel AME Church building. Vehicles were lined up to from the church to the Ashville Highway entrance.
In keeping with the COVID-19 criteria for social distancing, volunteers brought bags and boxes of food goods to each vehicle, so that clients didn't have to get out.
Several very grateful area families received food help on this day of charitable giving.
Only four volunteers were available on this day to help with the distribution; the churches say that this is a sad volunteer turnout, considering that five different local churches are supposed to be involved with this monthly charitable giveaway.
For future volunteer opportunities, or to receive food items at the next giveaway, contact Nellie Randell at (850) 997-5605 or Jackie Harvey at (850) 997-8410.
